Pads, rotors and the rest of your brakes
Disc brakes slow a wheel by pressing brake pads against a rotating disc, called a rotor. A caliper applies the force. Wear or a problem elsewhere in the braking system can affect how the car stops, so the condition of the system matters when deciding which work is needed.
Describe what happens when you stop
Does the noise begin when you press the pedal? Does the car pull, or does the pedal or steering wheel vibrate during a stop? Explain when you first noticed the change and whether it is getting worse. For grinding, pulling or a changed pedal feel, call to discuss the concern and arrival arrangements before driving to the shop.
- A sound: when it starts and whether it changes during a stop.
- A vibration: felt through the pedal, steering wheel or whole car.
- A warning: the exact light or dashboard message.
If the handling changes even when you are not braking, the steering and suspension page explains that related concern.
Get a clear brake-repair estimate
Ask what was found, which parts need attention and what the proposed repair includes. Pads, rotors and other brake work can involve different jobs, so compare estimates for the same scope. If you already have a written recommendation, use it to discuss the work with us.
Service questions
Your questions, answered.
Does brake noise mean I need new pads?
Not always. Some brake pads have wear indicators that make a high-pitched sound when the pads need attention, but noise can have other causes. Tell us when you hear it and how the car behaves while stopping so the concern can be assessed.
Why does my car vibrate when I brake?
Several concerns can produce vibration. Whether you feel it in the pedal, steering wheel or whole car—and whether it happens only during braking—helps describe the issue. The cause needs to be established before choosing a repair.
How do I ask for a brake-repair estimate?
Call or text with the year, make and model, the braking symptoms, and any previous findings. Ask which parts and labor the estimate covers and whether the vehicle needs to be assessed before the price can be confirmed.
