What a trouble code can tell you
Your vehicle’s onboard monitoring system can store a trouble code when it detects an unexpected condition. Reading the code gives the investigation a starting point. The cause may involve a component, wiring or another related condition, so further assessment may be needed before a repair is recommended.
Share the warning and what the car is doing
Keep any code or dashboard message you already have. Tell us whether the light stays on, flashes or has gone out, and whether you noticed hesitation, stalling or another change. Describe what has already happened; avoid driving specifically to recreate the problem.
- What appeared on the dashboard and when.
- What changed in starting, idling or acceleration.
- Any recent work and whether the concern began before or after it.
Know what the diagnostic visit covers
When arranging a visit, ask about the diagnostic charge, what the assessment covers and how any recommended repair will be quoted. Share previous codes, findings or estimates if you have them. These details help keep the conversation focused on what still needs to be understood.
For an existing repair recommendation, see engine and transmission repair. If the main problem is that the engine will not turn over, see batteries and electrical concerns.
Service questions
Your questions, answered.
Do I need a trouble code before calling?
No. Start with the dashboard warning and any change in how the vehicle runs. If you already have a code, keep the exact letters and numbers available to share with us.
What does a flashing check-engine light mean?
A flashing check-engine light can indicate an engine misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. Follow your vehicle’s owner’s manual and have the vehicle checked promptly. If you are unsure whether to drive, call to discuss the symptoms and arrival arrangements first.
Should I mention a check-engine light that has gone out?
Yes. Explain when it appeared, how long it stayed on and whether the vehicle behaved differently. Any saved code or earlier findings can add useful history.
Does the diagnostic price include repairs?
Pricing depends on the work quoted. Ask us what the diagnostic charge covers and how any repair would be priced; do not assume repairs or a credit toward them are included. Confirm the cost before agreeing to work.
